Dow turns waste sachets into bicycle parking racks

The first bicycle parking rack made from waste plastic sachets will be donated by Dow to the Philippine General Hospital to support medical front-liners, promote recycling and enable healthy and sustainable mobility in the new normal.

Dow and Envirotech Recycling have successfully produced another innovative application for hard-to-recycle waste plastic bags and sachets. This is the first bicycle parking rack manufactured in the Philippines, using post-consumer plastic waste. Over five thousand (5,000) pieces of waste plastics bags and sachets were used in each bike rack, preventing these types of plastic waste from reaching landfills and waterways.

“We’re dedicating this new upcycled product to the heroic COVID-19 medical front-liners in the Philippines”, says Dow Philippines Country Manager Bobby Batungbacal. The first upcycled bike rack will be donated to the emergency medical team of the country’s largest hospital, Philippine General Hospital (PGH). According to PGH Administrator to Director, Dr. Gerardo “Gap” Legaspi, they currently have around three hundred (300) medical professionals and staff using bicycles. This initiative seeks to support COVID-19 medical front-liners by enabling safe, healthy and sustainable low-emissions mobility in the new normal, while preventing hard-to-recycle plastic waste from reaching landfills, waterways and oceans.
